Mental Health Awareness Week

It's Mental Health Awareness Week (October 5th to 11th).

And I'm guest blogging at Strut in Her Shoes all week. My posts will be a combination of new stuff and recycled stuff.

Check the first two posts out here and here.

  1. Monique, would you be interested in sharing your story with Stigmama.com? As women, whether or not we decide to become mothers, we struggle with stigma against mental illness. Do you find that the stigma against mental illness is any different for women of color in the US than it is for whites?

    1. Sure, I'll share my story for your website. I'm not a mother though. What specifically do you want me to write about? Are you in the US? I am; I'm in New Jersey. I don't know if the stigma is different for women of color than white women. I've never discussed mental health and race with anyone really, white or not.

  2. But many children have mental illness and, unfortunately, are not diagnosed or treated. The purpose of these facts is to alert you to mental illness and watch for it in children.

    1. I'm not 100% sure, but I think one of the difficulties in diagnosing children is that it is hard to discern what is normal childhood behavior versus what is a mental disorder. And I worry about the over-medication of children who are diagnosed. What do psych meds do to developing brains?
